Known as the grandfather of maternal health, Prof Sai has brought dedication, passion and wisdom to a field that has often been little understood or appreciated.

Professor Sai is popularly known as the "grandfather of maternal health" and recognized the world over for his significant contributions to the field of family health. Born in Ghana's capital, Accra, his father died when he was very young and was brought up by his mother and aunties. In the interview, he says that inspired his focus on women's issues and maternal health. He studied medicine at the universities of London and Edinburgh. Professor Fred Sai has received several awards for his efforts, including the United Nations Population Award in 1993 and Star of Ghana, the nation's highest honour.
